A/B Testing for Beginners: Test One Change, One Number

Q8DM Blog

Most business owners have opinions about their website: the button is too small, the headline is confusing, the price should come first. Opinions are cheap. A/B testing tells you which version actually brings more orders, without betting the budget on a guess.

The idea is simple: version A for half your visitors, version B for the other half, then compare one measurable result. No statistics degree needed, just discipline.

What A/B Testing Really Means

An A/B test puts two versions of the same page in front of real visitors together. Version A is what you have today. Version B is your improvement: a different headline, a shorter form, a clearer price, a bigger WhatsApp button.

Both versions face the same conditions: same campaign, same weekend traffic. The only difference is your change, so the result is easier to trust.

Start With a Question, Not a Redesign

A weak test says: let us improve the homepage. A strong test says: if we move the price above the specifications, will more people request a quote?

Write the question down first. It should name the change and the number it must move. If you cannot finish "we expect this change to increase ___", the test is not ready.

Change One Thing at a Time

Change the headline, the photo and the button colour together, and an improvement teaches you almost nothing. You cannot tell which change did the work, or repeat the win elsewhere.

One change, one test, then the next. Slow at first, then it compounds.

Pick One Number That Pays the Bills

Choose one measure that matters: completed orders, quote requests, calls, or submitted forms. Clicks and time on page are easy to move and easy to misread.

Fix that number before the test starts and do not switch to a friendlier metric halfway. If orders did not move, the test failed. That is a useful answer, not a wasted week.

Give It Enough Time

A two-day test mostly measures those two days: weekday traffic differs from weekend traffic. Run at least one full week, and do not stop early because the first morning looked good.

Mistakes That Waste the Test

A Small Test You Can Run This Month

Take one product page and note its visitors and orders. Then change one thing: put the price and the order-on-WhatsApp button above the description. Run both for two weeks, then compare completed orders per hundred visitors.

If version B wins, keep it and test the next idea on the same page. If it loses, you saved yourself from a change that looked obvious but was not.

What to Do With the Result

Write the result in one line: what you changed, what happened, the date. After a few months you have a short list of what customers respond to, which beats another meeting about taste.
