Getting Your New Website Indexed by Google: First Launch Steps

Q8DM Blog

The site is live, the design looks right, and you search your own name on Google โ€” nothing. The gap between "the website is up" and "customers can find the website" is indexing. Google finds pages by following links, then decides whether to store them in its index, and only indexed pages can rank. A brand-new domain has no history, so Google has no reason to trust it quickly: it crawls, waits, and comes back later. Most delays come from a few small, fixable issues, and your job is to remove whatever slows that down.

Step 1: Make sure crawlers are allowed in

Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and check there is no line blocking the whole site. The most common launch mistake is a "Disallow: /" left over from a staging setup, which quietly tells Google to stay out. Delete it, save, and reload the file in your browser to confirm.

Step 2: Verify your site in Google Search Console

Search Console is free, and it is the only place Google tells you what it thinks of your site. Verify ownership by uploading the HTML file it gives you to your site root, or by adding the DNS record to your domain settings. DNS covers every version of the domain, so it is the safer choice.

Once verified, check the homepage in URL Inspection:

Step 3: Submit a sitemap and request indexing

A sitemap.xml is a list of your important URLs. It lets Google find inner pages instead of waiting to stumble across them. Upload it to the root, add a Sitemap line at the end of robots.txt pointing to it, and submit the same address in Search Console. Every URL in it should be a real page that loads โ€” broken links hurt its credibility.

Then use URL Inspection, paste the homepage address and click Request Indexing. Repeat for your five to ten most important pages. One request per URL is enough; asking again daily does not speed anything up.

Why a new site can still take weeks

Delay is normal, not failure. A new domain has no track record, so Google gives it limited attention until it proves itself. Expect a few days to a few weeks. At Q8DM, a software company in Kuwait, the delays we see almost always trace back to a homepage with no real text, a single-page site, or content copied from other websites.

Stay away from shortcuts like buying links or blasting your URL across directories. They do not speed up indexing and can cost you later. Useful content is what makes Google come back on its own.

A simple post-launch checklist

Get these right once, then just check the Pages report weekly. Indexing is a foundation, not a daily battle.
