The hardest question for any freelance developer or small studio is simple: what should this project cost? Bad pricing does not just lose you one deal โ it can cost you a year of exhausting work with no profit at the end.
For small and mid-sized clients in the local market, fixed price is usually correct โ provided the scope is explicit and revisions are capped.
Many developers multiply hours by rate and forget meetings, post-delivery support, revisions, and failed experiments. The practical rule: add a 30 percent buffer to any time estimate, and add a one-month support line after delivery. If the number still looks like a loss after those additions, the project was never profitable.
First, undercutting the market to win the client, then discovering two months later that you are working for free and resenting the project. Second, ignoring hosting and third-party service costs. Third, accepting unlimited revisions out of goodwill โ that quietly destroys the margin.
At Q8DM we price against a written scope, because experience shows any project without a clear scope becomes an open-ended project. Upfront clarity protects both sides.
The revisions clause is the most important line in the contract. Write it as: two revision rounds inside scope, and any new request is quoted separately. When a client asks for a screen that was never planned, say yes and attach a quote โ not just yes. A polite refusal builds a better reputation than acceptance that ends in a late, thinner delivery.
Equally, do not become rigid. Small additions โ a text change, moving a button โ cost minutes. Do them without a conversation, and that goodwill is what makes a client accept a paid change order later.
A fair price is not the lowest price โ it is the one that lets you deliver good work and stay in business. Know your real cost, write the scope, keep a support line. Q8DM has provided software, design, and training in Kuwait since 1998, and our workshops cover pricing and project management for developers and small business owners.
