Print Design: From Business Cards to Brochures

Q8DM Blog

Print design follows different rules than screen design. A business card and a brochure share the same fundamentals: correct colour mode, safe margins, suitable paper, and consistency with your brand. The gap between a file that prints perfectly and one that comes back with wrong colours and cut edges comes down to a few small details.

Getting these right before you send anything to a print shop saves money, reprints, and delivery delays.

CMYK, Not RGB

Screens display colour in RGB, while printing presses use CMYK. If you design in RGB and hand the file over, the printed result will not match what you saw on screen. Start your document in CMYK and use the exact colour values defined in your brand guidelines.

Do not judge colour on a monitor alone. Displays vary, and none of them show what ink on paper will look like.

Bleed and Margins

Bleed is the extra area added beyond the trimmed edge of the design, so a slight cutting shift does not leave a white line along the border. Margins keep text and logos safely away from the cut.

Forgetting these two settings is one of the most common causes of rejected files and expensive reprints. Confirm the final trimmed size with your print shop before you start designing, so the layout does not need rebuilding later.

Paper and Formats

Paper choice is part of the design, not an afterthought. A thick business card with a refined finish feels completely different from a thin one. Folded brochures need the paper weight considered at the folding stage, so creases stay clean and the layout does not shift.

Ask your print shop what stock is available and fits your budget, and request a sample before committing to a large run. Finishing options add a sense of quality and keep your card in a customer's hand longer.

Consistency With Your Brand Identity

Business cards, brochures, letterheads, and packaging are all extensions of one identity. When the elements below stay consistent across every format, customers recognise your brand instantly and trust it faster:

Fonts belong on that list for a reason: not every free font is licensed for commercial print. Some require a licence for print use, while others are limited to personal projects. Use properly licensed typefaces, and either supply the font files or convert text to outlines when you hand over the artwork, so nothing gets substituted during production.

This is where Q8DM, a Kuwaiti company providing software, design and training since 1998, connects printed materials with the digital identity so both look like one brand.

Working With a Print Shop

Every print shop has its own delivery requirements, so ask early: which file formats do you need? Many request a high quality PDF, while others prefer the source files from the design application.

Before the full run, ask for a physical proof. Paper weight, texture, and colour cannot be judged from a screen, and approving a sample is far cheaper than reprinting. Keep a copy of the final files yourself too.

If you need printed materials that match the quality of your brand, Q8DM can handle design through to print-ready delivery, in full alignment with your identity. Reach out and start at q8dm.com.
