Print Design: Business Cards and Banners

Q8DM Blog

You have an event or trade show coming up and you need business cards and banners fast. Print design looks simple until the file comes back with wrong colours, cropped text, or pixelated images. The difference is a handful of small details handled before you send the file.

For small businesses in Kuwait and the Gulf, those details save money, reprints, and delays. This guide covers the basics: sizes, margins, image resolution, and colour.

Screen vs Print

Your screen shows colour with light, while paper reflects it. The same design looks brighter and smoother on screen than on paper, and a rich black may print as a flat dark grey.

Monitors also differ from each other, so what you see on your phone is not what your designer sees. Judge colour by the defined brand values, not by your display.

CMYK, Not RGB

Screens work in RGB, built from red, green, and blue light. Presses work in CMYK, built from cyan, magenta, yellow, and black ink. Some RGB colours simply cannot be reproduced in ink, such as neon green or electric blue.

Start the document in CMYK and define your brand colours in CMYK values, not only HEX. If your logo depends on a sensitive colour, ask your printer for a paper proof before a large run.

Sizes and Margins

The common business card size in Kuwait and the Gulf is 90 x 50 mm. Banner size depends on where it hangs: a roll-up, a wall banner, or a trade show backdrop. Never design on a guessed size โ€” get final dimensions in millimetres from your printer or the venue.

300dpi Images

For standard printing, images need 300 dots per inch at the final size. Images pulled from the web are usually far below that and will look soft or blocky.

If you shoot with a phone, keep the original files. A large image can be scaled down safely; a small one cannot be enlarged without visible loss.

Print-Ready Handoff

Deliver a high-resolution PDF with fonts outlined, or the licensed fonts embedded in the file. Font licensing matters โ€” some fonts are free for personal use only, and a commercial print job needs the right licence.

Q8DM, based in Kuwait, has worked in programming, web design, graphic design, and technology training since 1998, and prepares print-ready artwork with local press requirements in mind.

Finally, build a simple brand guide with your exact colours and fonts so every card, banner, and brochure stays consistent. Q8DM in Kuwait also runs practical training for teams that want to handle basic design and file handoff in-house.
